More civilians killed as heavy fighting continues
Mortar and sniper fire killed at least two civilians in Sarajevo on Thursday (18/5) in spite of an agreement by both warring factions to stop all heavy shelling of the Bosnian capital. The latest incidents followed two days of the worst fighting Sarajevo has witnessed in more than two years. UN officials said the Bosnian Serb mortar was fired from the Sarajevo suburb of Ilidza in violation of the agreement reached by the Bosnian government and Bosnian Serb military leaders to stop all heavy shelling of the city. The mortar explosion killed one civilian in the Sarajevo city centre. In the afternoon, suspected Serb snipers shot and killed a middle-aged man who was helping erect anti-sniping barriers in downtown Sarajevo. The UN said the Bosnian government army retook some strategic positions overlooking the city. A Bosnian Serb television report on Wednesday night claimed the government forces had launched an offensive. The report included video of a UN command post under fire. UNPROFOR spokesman Lt Col Gary Coward said the peacekeepers would not be abandoning their post and that he expected the UN position to be respected. In northern Bosnia, there was also more fighting between Croats and Serbs.
