Al spent nearly three years hidden by an Indonesian-Dutch family, cared for by their Muslim nanny. He was largely confined to the house and backyard for fear of raising suspicion among neighbors and passersby. “The only view that I had of the outside world was through a mail slot in the door,” remembers Al.
