The Cévennes mountain range in south-central France is a frequently overlooked area, peppered with lovely river gorges and wild and windswept hillsides. But in 1879, or thereabouts, Robert Lewis Stevens explored and fell in love with the region while traveling on foot, accompanied by a winsome, yet opinionated, donkey by the name of Modestine. He memorialized the journey in one of his earliest works titled "Travels with a Donkey in the Cévennes." Today, it's still a great place to wander about with a donkey companion, or cool off in one of the many crisp and clean mountain rivers. Looking for a modern take on Steven's experience?
