The Stabat Mater has been set to music by many Western composers, most famously by
Writen in the 13th century by Friar Jacopone da Toldi or Pope Innocent III
All parts are related to Mary’s (mother of Jesus) suffering during Christ’s crucifixion
The Hymn is called Stabat Mater coming from the first line “Stabat Mater dolorosa” (The sorrowful mother was standing)
Many famous composers made the music for the hymn, like: Palestrina, Vivaldi, Domenico and Alessandro Scarlatti, Pergolesi, Haydn, Rossini, Dvořák , Verdi , Karol Szymanowski , Poulenc and Arvo Pärt, among others.
This sequence of 12 pieces was created for Soprano and Alto soloists; it is performed also by countertenor voices. Contains arias and duets,
