With four kids and a stressful life, Lisa Dickinson would turn to cookies and brownies because she "deserved" it, she reasoned. Plus, "I always thought I got energy from eating sugar," she says.
But after completing the 32-day Sugar Smart Diet program, she realized sugar wasn't the answer. Lisa admits that when she first cut out sugar, she felt like she was in a fog. But once the healthy eating and exercise kicked in, "I felt so much better," she says.
Lisa also wants to be a role model for her kids so they can make healthy choices. Scanning nutrition labels has become a game to find the healthy options. "If you just buy apple sauce off the shelf, it's full of corn syrup," Lisa notes. Now they buy the natural versions. And for snacks, she encourages her kids to have fruit or celery with peanut butter.
And on the exercise front, she does interval training—walking a few minutes alternating with running a few minutes—for an efficient workout. "I also got a bike with a seat on the back for my 3-year-old," she smiled. "And now I walk with a group of ladies from my church. It makes a 5-mile walk seem like nothing when you're walking and talking. That's become a really important time in my week."
