(26 Apr 2018) Commemorations were held in Ukraine on Thursday to mark 32 years since the world's worst nuclear disaster.
Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko laid flowers at the Chernobyl nuclear plant, while a solemn remembrance ceremony was also held in capital Kiev.
The civil and military responders who were sent to Chernobyl to help with the clear up are known as "liquidators".
Surviving "liquidators" were also present at the ceremony in Kiev.
In 1986, an explosion and fire at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant caused radioactive fallout to begin spewing into the atmosphere.
Dozens of people were killed in the immediate aftermath of the disaster, while the long-term death toll from radiation poisoning is believed to number in the thousands.
The explosion also sent a radioactive cloud over Europe and forced the evacuation of about 115,000 people.
