This mini lecture goes over the space navigation or Orbit Determination (OD) problem. A simple example of a satellite tracked by a ground station is discussed, but is easily extended to more complex problems. The concept of statistical navigation and covariance ellipsoids are introduced. The Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) is described (but not derived) and the list of inputs are discussed.
Next OD video will take these concepts and deploy them in a simulation in a typical pre-launch mission analysis exercise.
