Delegates will be gathering for the Democratic National Convention in Chicago next week to officially anoint Vice President Kamala Harris as the party’s nominee for president of the United States.

They will be greeted by mass protests under the banner, “Stand with Palestine! End US Aid to Israel!”

We are joined by Hatem Abudayyeh, a spokesperson for the March on the DNC Coalition, which is working to mobilize tens of thousands of people in the streets of Chicago.

The coalition’s call to action accuses the Democratic Party of “financing genocide in Palestine and war in multiple countries; continuing the mass incarceration of Black and brown people; deporting millions of immigrants; and neglecting campaign promises made to the oppressed communities who represent their voting base.”

In the lead up to the Democratic convention, there is a struggle to ensure that protesters can effectively exercise their First Amendment right to be heard. Chicago authorities have delayed issuing protest permits and organizers have sued the city in an attempt to overturn what they see as a restrictive march route imposed by officials.

As well as representing the March on the DNC Coalition, Hatem, a Chicagoan, is national chair of the US Palestinian Community Network (USPCN), a leading force in mobilizing Palestinians and allies across the country to protest US suppport for the Israeli genocide.
