Spotlight on: The Rolex Datejust. 3 reasons it’s worth getting yourself one.
The most popular Rolex watches have their own legions of fans. Only a few will tout themselves as Rolex Datejust fans – but will have an immense respect for the watch, anyway.
That’s the beauty of the Rolex Datejust. It’s one of the most understated watches of Rolex, but both the casual watch wearer and the seasoned collector will agree, it’s a watch definitely worth having.
Whether you’re looking for that “one watch”, or a worthy new addition to your collection, you can’t go wrong with the Rolex Datejust. Here are 3 reasons to get one.
First is that you’ll have a piece that made horological history.
Many take the date complication for granted today, but it was an innovation that changed watchmaking. When the Datejust was launched in 1945, it was the first automatic wristwatch whose date instinctively changed at midnight.
The Datejust was also unveiled on the 40th anniversary of Rolex. Together with the watch, Rolex launched the Jubilee bracelet, now one of the most iconic watch bracelets ever.
Its styling has remained largely unchanged, but many of the features we see on Rolex watches today were tested on the Datejust: the Jubilee bracelet, the Cyclops window, the two-tone metal combination, or Rolesor.
For those who are not keen on collecting watches and just want one or few that they can rotate, the Rolex Datejust makes the perfect choice.
The simple styling can go from office to weekend, and can be worn with the most casual or formal ensembles. The Twinlock crown and 100m water resistance makes it acceptable for swimming as well.
Of course, it also has the Perpetual self-winding movement, present in all Rolex watches. With the Datejust, you’ve got yourself a reliable daily beater.
While the Rolex Datejust is a pure classic, it does offer many variations that you can tailor to fit your personal style.
There are basically three sizes available under the Rolex Datejust family. There’s the original 36 millimeter Rolex Datejust, available in steel, yellow gold, white gold and Rolesor.
Then there’s the Datejust II. Discontinued only in 2016, this is the larger, thicker, more masculine sized Datejust. It’s still available in the pre-owned market, with steel & white gold, and steel & yellow gold variations.
And then we have the Datejust 41, an update to the Datejust II. It comes with a slimmer case and looks more like the 36mm, only larger. Available in yellow gold, Rolesor, and just recently, a very hip full steel version that’s more appealing to a younger audience.
Women have choices as well with the Ladies Datejust models, or the 31 & 33 millimeter Datejust.
Apart from the variety of sizes and metals being offered, the Rolex Datejust is also available with a good array of styles, and different dial colors and textures.
There are also different choices for bezels - either smooth or fluted ; as well as hour markers that run the gamut from Arabic, Roman numeral, baton, and even diamonds.
Even your choice of bracelet can create a different effect. Choose the Jubilee or President for a dressy feel.
Or go for an Oyster bracelet for a sporty, more casual look. Clearly, you can choose any look you desire with the Rolex Datejust.
And because there are a lot of variations among Rolex Datejust models, you’re less likely to encounter issues with availability – the perfect all-occasion watch is within your reach.
