Presentation from the 2013 AAPA IMPACT conference in Washington, DC.
Presented by: Joyce Nieman, MHS, PA-C, University Of Colorado;
Jonathan Bowser, MS, PA-C, University Of Colorado
Presenters will review major outcomes of the Institute of Medicine's report To Err is Human, and follow-up report Crossing the Quality Chasm: A New Health System for the 21st Century. The latter calls for a major overhaul of the U.S. health care delivery system to include; applying evidence to health care quality, using information technology, aligning payment policies with quality improvement, and preparing the workforce. We will discuss the need to transform clinical practice and education to emphasize the Six Aims for Improvement; providing safe, effective, patient-centered, timely, efficient, and equitable care, and their relevance to the clinical practice. This session will provide strong evidence for why, with the advent of healthcare reform and new guidelines for physician assistant re-certification, now is the time for PAs to incorporate Quality Improvement (QI) into their respective practices.
