SHIITE MILITIAS MOVE INTO RAMADI
Iraqi forces and the Iranian-backed Popular Mobilization Forces have begun moving against ISIS after the fall of Ramadi on May 17. Locals in Iraq’s Anbar province report hundreds of Shiite militia fighters have moved from the Habbaniya military base toward ISIS controlled area. Capital of Anbar, Ramadi is only 110km west of Baghdad. Its fall was seen as a major defeat for the al Abadi government. About 500 people died in the city, and more than 40,000 - a third of the population - have fled in the past week.
PERU STATE OF EMERGENCY
State of emergency was declared in the south of Peru where protest against the Tia Maria copper mine has killed 4 people in two months. The decision, which entails a full military control of the province of Isly, came hours after clashes between protesters and police left a 55-year-old demonstrator dead. 4 demonstrators and 3 police have also been injured as group of protesters tried to take control of a local police station. Protesters argue that if built, the Tia Maria mine will pollute Arequipa’s key waterways.
SENATE FAILS TO PASS FREEDOM ACT
US Senate blocked both a House-passed bill and a short-term extension of the USA Patriot Act. The bill would have moved the bulk collection of phone records of American citizens from the National Security Agency being held by telecom companies. The vote on the bill was 57 to 42, while the extension was 45 to 54, both short of the 60 votes threshold. The expires on June 1 with no real path to being reauthorized before it lapses for at least a brief period of time.
