(5 Nov 2013) The activist collective Anonymous called on Tuesday for 'Million Mask March' rallies across the world and many of their adherents wore Guy Fawkes masks in cities such as London, Sydney, Manila and Toronto.
Many protestors aligned with the 'hacktivist' movement wore Guy Fawkes masks during a demonstration near the White House in Washington D.C.
"I'm trying to help the American people wake up a little bit and know that it's our life, it's our world and we can do with it what we want and we can make it a better place if we all choose to and if we all work together," said demonstrator Dougg Johnson.
According the Facebook page of the Washington area Anonymous group, the rally was held to express many concerns, including those about the government, education, and war.
The group also stressed that a peaceful and respectful demonstration be held.
The Guy Fawkes mask has become a symbol of Anonymous.
November 5th celebrations mark the date in 1605 when the "Gunpowder Plot" failed as Catholic extremist Guy Fawkes was seized before he could blow up the English Parliament.
Fittingly, fireworks are set off all over the United Kingdom, and also many Commonwealth countries, to commemorate the incident.
