The Battle of Hürtgen Forest was a series of battles fought from 19 September to 10 February, Over 35k american soldiers lost their lives fighting for this massive forest and for hill 493. Hürtgen Forest was thick, so thick bombs would more likely hit the tree tops then the ground, tanks could not get thought. so feld general George S. Patton decided to send in americas 1th infantry division. the german 85th Infantry Division was gonna fight for every inch after losing Aachen and germany's 7 army not long ago. as so this battle was nicknamed the american meat grinder for good reason!
