Financing Renewable Generation projects such as onshore windfarms, offshore windfarms and solar farms can be difficult. The projects can have an expected lifespan of 25-years and come with significant costs, sometimes into the 100s of millions of pounds.
One method of funding a project of this size is by entering into an agreement with another organisation who will guarantee to buy the output from the renewable generation site (i.e. the power that they produce). These types of arrangements are called Power Purchase Agreements (PPA). A PPA is an agreement between the owner/developer of an asset that produces power, and a company who wishes to buy the power from the asset.
