After captivating audiences for over two decades as a beloved stage musical, Wicked finally makes its highly anticipated debut on the big screen as a spectacular, generation-defining cinematic event this holiday season.
Wicked: The Untold Story of the Witches of Oz features an all-star cast, with Emmy, Grammy, and Tony award-winning Cynthia Erivo (known for Harriet and Broadway’s The Color Purple) as Elphaba. Elphaba is a young woman with distinctive green skin, struggling to embrace her true potential. Opposite her is Grammy-winning, multi-platinum recording artist Ariana Grande, portraying Glinda, a popular young woman driven by privilege and ambition who has yet to find her true heart.
The story unfolds at Shiz University in the fantastical Land of Oz, where Elphaba and Glinda form an unlikely but profound friendship. Their bond is tested after an encounter with The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, leading them down very different paths. Glinda's relentless pursuit of popularity lures her into the corridors of power, while Elphaba's commitment to integrity and justice brings unexpected and shocking consequences. Their adventures will ultimately shape their destinies as Glinda the Good and the Wicked Witch of the West.
The film also boasts an impressive supporting cast, including Oscar® winner Michelle Yeoh as the regal headmistress Madame Morrible, Jonathan Bailey (from Bridgerton and Fellow Travelers) as the carefree prince Fiyero, Tony nominee Ethan Slater (known for Broadway’s Spongebob Squarepants and Fosse/Verdon) as the altruistic Munchkin student Boq, Marissa Bode making her film debut as Nessarose, Elphaba’s beloved sister, and Jeff Goldblum as the legendary Wizard of Oz.
Additional characters include Glinda's scheming friends Pfannee and ShenShen, played by Emmy nominee Bowen Yang (of Saturday Night Live) and Bronwyn James (from Harlots), along with a new character created for the film, Miss Coddle, portrayed by Tony nominee Keala Settle (from The Greatest Showman).
Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Jon M. Chu (known for Crazy Rich Asians and In the Heights), Wicked is the first part of a two-part immersive cultural celebration. The second part is set to be released on November 26, 2025.
The film is produced by Marc Platt (behind La La Land and The Little Mermaid), whose works have garnered numerous accolades, and multiple Tony winner David Stone (known for Kimberly Akimbo and Next to Normal). They previously collaborated on the blockbuster Wicked stage musical. Executive producers include David Nicksay, Stephen Schwartz, and Jared LeBoff.
Adapted from Gregory Maguire's bestselling novel, Wicked is brought to the screen by the stage production’s book writer Winnie Holzman and the legendary Grammy and Oscar® winning composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz. The Broadway musical is produced by Universal Stage Productions, Marc Platt, the Araca Group, Jon B. Platt, and David Stone.
