Harry Truman ascended to the presidency upon the death of Franklin Delano Roosevelt. He had to wrap up World War II, which involved his controversial decision to drop atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Truman also had to deal with the Soviet Union emerging as the next global threat upon the defeat of Nazi Germany, and the opening events of the Cold War. It was an eventful time, which marked the emergence of America as the world's premiere superpower. Let's see precisely how Truman handled it.
