SCI ATHLETES: are you slouching? Then fix your wheelchair posture! There are so many small adjustments you can make to the chair to support your body better—and YOU are the only one who knows what you need. So what are you waiting for?
We all know GOOD POSTURE is important, but paralysis definitely makes it a challenge! What can you do about it when your muscles don't respond? 👉 Creating a supportive seated environment is a great first step!
If you sit in one place for hours – whether a wheelchair, in the car, or at your desk – your bones (and body) will adapt to the shape of the chair. With an improvement in spinal alignment, you'll probably notice better breathing, digestion, and muscle activation...not to mention projecting more confidence.
Here, Theo noticed the old foam backrest of his wheelchair was actually CREATING the dreaded SLOUCH. Instead of spending lots of $$$ on a new backrest, he DIY'd it. And here's how you can too:
1️⃣ Figure out where support is critical for comfort and safety, and where you currently have TOO MUCH support.
2️⃣ Create this customized support using foam and other cushions. Look beyond traditional wheelchair brands! We've found @Purple cushions are perfect for customization.
3️⃣ Install where needed: Try a few different ways to keep the supports in place. Adhesive Velcro is a great option.
4️⃣ Make adjustments & iterate! You will probably try a few different configurations before you find that perfect fit.
Your movement is constantly evolving – so should your physical space. What you needed a year ago is likely different from what you need now, or will need in a year.
Who else is constantly creating better posture, either through chair adjustments or in your body?
