Buying Story
If you know about the DJI Mini 2, you probably know about the DJI Mavic Mini which came out just one year before. Ease of use, impressive 1080 HD image quality, and extremely small design. For me, it was one of the first very desirable drones they offered, but it was lacking 4K video.
Let’s cut to the chase, the Mini 2 and Mavic Mini are both under 250 grams and this was a unique accomplishment. Why does this matter? Licence, flight plans, and drone registration. That’s right, you need those to operate a drone safely and legally. The Mini 2 however, in most cases, does not. Because it’s only 249 grams, most regions consider this little fella a toy, and therefore, you can fly without all the aforementioned. Keep in mind, this is ONLY applicable for certain regions, and we recommend double checking your local drone laws before flying.
So should you pass on the older Mavic Mini and instead go for the Mini 2?
For me it was simple, I wanted a drone that met the 249g weight class but could also film in 4K. In terms of quality and reliability, DJI already had me sold on other products that I bought in the past, like the OSMO Mobile 2. I had expectations, but to my delight, the DJI Mini 2 surpassed what I wanted in a portable, 4K, 249-gram mini drone.
When it comes to drones, not many names come to mind, and even at a glance, you can see DJI is the king. Whether you’re a hobbyist or videographer that wants drone footage, you are truly spoiled for choices, but consider all the factors, and you’ll start to understand why the Mini 2 checks all the boxes.
Highlighted key features
•249 grams, absolutely incredible how light and small this drone is!
•31 Min flight time on average, consider wind and temperature, maybe closer to 20 min
•10 km video transmission, about 3 km with broken line of sight, dam that’s far!
•High wind resistance, ability to capture smooth stable footage even at 38 kph winds
•4K video resolution at 30fps, can film 60 fps at 1080
•Quick shots, very cool modes like dronie, helix, circle, boomerang, these are basically auto pilot features
FAQ
•Do you need a micro-SD card? Yes, even though it can store to your smartphone, it caps quality at 720p, and I think that might only be photos
•What type of micro-SD should I get? DJI has a lot of recommended cards, but I bought a SanDisk Extreme Plus 256gb, U3, V30, A2. Make sure you buy a high-speed card, it matters!
•Is it waterproof? Hahaha, no, definitely not.
•If you fly the Mini 2 at a wall will it stop? No, it has no sensors for collision detection, just on the bottom for landing.
•What is the resolution of the camera? The specs for video are 4K 24/25/30 fps, 2.7K 24/25/30, and 1080p 48/50/60 fps
•Can it take photos? Yup, max resolution is 4000x3000 (4:3), and 4000x2250 (16:9)
Favourite thing
The best thing about the Mini 2 is that you get amazing and stable 4K picture quality that’s very inexpensive and easy to pilot. Far and away, this is the most accessible drone on the market, especially for beginners or experienced videographers looking for a drone.
Buyer recommended
Get the fly more combo, it’s worth it and it’s way cheaper to buy the kit rather than everything separately (just one spare drone battery is around $70.00). So get the combo, at least for the batteries and fast charger. The fly more combo includes
• 2 extra batteries
• Two-way charging hub
• Shoulder carrying bag
• 3 extra propellers
• Spare screw
• Spare control sticks
• 18W fast charger
