WADA recommends banning Russia
The Russian sport minister has denied allegations by the World Anti Doping Agency. An independent commission led by the former head of WADA has accused Moscow of state-sponsored doping in the 2012 Olympics. WADA has recommended Russia be banned from next year’s Olympic games . It also said five athletes and five coaches should be given lifetime bans. The commission’s report alleged senior officials from the International Association of Athletics Federations were engaged in corruption and bribery. French prosecutors arrested former IAAF president Lamine Diack last week.
Draft resolution on violence
Burundi’s foreign ministry has rejected a French draft resolution to the UN about the violence in Burundi. He insists the country is calm and that only a small group of people in the capital Bujumbura are violent. But the UN could still vote on the draft resolution that condemns killings, arrests and other rights violations in the country. At least 240 people have died since protests against President Pierre Nkurunziza’s third term began in April. He’s previously admitted that his security forces have killed and tortured protesters. Government opposition groups say his third term is unconstitutional.
University staff resign after protests
Two top staff members at the University of Missouri have resigned after students protested against racism on its campuses. Several black student groups said President Tim Wolfe had ignored complaints about racial slurs. The Chancellor of the University’s Columbia campus has said he will step down at the end of the year.
‘Nu’ sells for $170.4M
Italian artist Modigliani’s painting Nu Couche, or Reclined Nude, has sold for more than 170 million dollars. That’s the second highest price ever for a piece of art sold at auction. Picasso’s Les Femmes d’Alger sold for 179 million dollars in May. This was the first time Nu Couche had ever been sold at auction.
