How can the Australian community work to remedy the segregation and discrimination experienced by people with disabilities?
Andrea Wildin from Algester, QLD asked via Skype: I’m a wheelchair user in QLD. My question is regarding the Disability Discrimination Act, the Anti-Discrimination Act and the Human Rights Act - which are in place to help us- yet we still don't have equal access into government buildings such as schools in 2019, with counter claims that we are a minority and the cost simply isn’t worth it. Or “financial hardship” on a government agency. With the evidence overwhelmingly in favour of full inclusion, how can this STILL be an excuse for segregation?
Jeanette Lee asked: There is still much individual and systemic disability discrimination of people with disabilities in our society today, for example young people with disabilities in nursing homes, the extremely high unemployment rate of people with disabilities and the frequent removal of children from parents who have disabilities. Can you please comment on how you think these discriminations can be better addressed and remedied?
