(31 Mar 2018) MOURNERS FOLLOW HAWKING COFFIN OUT OF CHURCH AFTER FUNERAL SERVICE
Some 500 invited guests gathered in Cambridge on Saturday for the private funeral of famed British scientist Stephen Hawking.
Crowds continued to line the streets outside the University Church of St. Mary the Great as the coffin was loaded into a hearse following the ceremony.
Actor Eddie Redmayne, who portrayed Hawking in the 2014 biographical drama "The Theory of Everything," gave a reading from Ecclesiastes during the service.
His co-star Felicity Jones, who played Hawking's first wife, Jane Wilde, was also in attendance, as was British guitarist and astrophysicist Brian May along with model and actress Lily Cole.
Hawking, who suffered from motor neurone disease, died on 14 March at age 76 and was known for his groundbreaking research into black holes and other phenomena.
The bell at the church, known locally as Great St. Mary's, tolled 76 times.
