The founder and director of KK Super Mart, along with directors of Xin Jian Chang, are among the individuals facing charges in Malaysia over the sale of socks bearing the word "Allah" at KK Super Mart convenience stores.
The founder and his wife, the director of KK Super Mart were charged on 26 March with the offence of “wounding the religious feelings of others” pleaded not guilty in front of Judge Muhamad Anas Mahadzir at the Shah Alam Sessions Court.
They were charged under Section 298 of the Penal Code, which can lead to imprisonment for up to one year, a fine, or both, upon conviction.
In addition to this, the directors of Xin Jian Chang faced charges under Section 109 of the Penal Code for abetment as suppliers of the socks, also pleaded not guilty.
If found guilty, the three directors could face imprisonment for up to a year, a fine, or both.
Judge Anas set bail at RM10,000 (S$2,850) for each of the five accused and scheduled April 29 as the trial date.
KK Super Mart has initiated a lawsuit against Xin Jian Chang for a minimum of RM31 million (approximately S$8,827,033) due to loss of profits, brand damage, and an interrupted stock market listing, among other damages.
Xin Jian Chang, on the other hand, is exploring potential legal avenues against its China supplier for negligence, for it allegedly did not place an order for the socks but was mistakenly included in a consignment.
