The GOES Health App is a solid tool for anyone heading into the backcountry and wanting a reliable first aid resource. A lot of the first aid apps out there are bogged down with text, which isn’t exactly helpful when you're dealing with an emergency. This app, though, takes all that essential information and breaks it down into easy-to-use checklists and visuals, making it much more practical when you’re out in the field.
The app covers a wide range of medical situations, from altitude sickness to frostbite, and it's all available offline, so you don't have to worry about being out of cell range. You can quickly assess a situation with step-by-step guidance, which is a big plus if you’re trying to figure out what to do in a hurry. There’s also a feature that gives you a weather report with potential health risks, which can be pretty handy when planning your hike.
For those who want extra peace of mind, the app has a 24/7 support option that connects you with Wilderness medicine-certified doctors. Of course, you’ll need cell service to make that call, but it’s a good backup to have. The app has some reasonable subscription plans, and overall, it’s a tool that’s worth having in your pack, even if you hope you never have to use it.
