Throughout History there have been a number of execution methods used to take the lives of some of the most serious criminals. In France, the guillotine was a device which was used to execute the French King Louis XVI and his Queen Marie Antoinette, but it also was used to execute criminals. Many executions were performed in public in front of huge crowds, but the final public execution in France took place in 1939 before the Second World War broke out. Eugen Weidmann was a prolific serial killer who caused chaos and murdered many different victims inside of France.

He used devious means to lure people to their deaths, but following a number of killings he was arrested. He tried to shoot the officers who arrested him, and then was knocked out by a hammer. He confessed to his crimes, and after his trial was sentenced to death and his execution would be the final public execution in France. The crowd's behaviour that day was regarded as shocking, but Weidmann was led to the guillotine and was hurriedly execution as crowds flocked to the scene.
