The decline of the New Deal reveals the fragility of New Deal style social democracy. In the United States liberals believed they had solved the contradictions of capitalism with Keynesian economics and technocratic management. But their solutions left workers feeling alienated. Once liberalism could no longer deliver material prosperity due to stagflation, conservatism displaced it, not because conservatism delivered the goods, which it did not, but because it offered a sense of purpose and meaning to people’s lives.
