STORYLINE
Transport workers across Italy walked off their jobs on Friday in a dispute over contracts.
The four-hour strike affected buses, trams and commuter trains in major cities, including Rome and Milan, with hours varying.
"There is a wide participation. The underground is completely shut down and on the surface, as you can see, the situation is quite difficult," Pietro, a transport worker told AP Television, as he helped tourists find alternative routes in Rome.
The strike has caused some traffic disruption.
AP Television showed pictures of people queuing for taxis outside Rome Termini train station on Friday.
"I'm waiting for the taxi. I am queuing endlessly, I come to Rome now and then and that's the welcome I receive," said one businessman outside the station.
However, unions have said they will guarantee a minimum service in rush hours.
"They confirmed my train would run regularly so I stayed because I can take my train to go back home," Luigi, a commuter from Naples, told AP Television in Rome Termini train station on Friday.
Service between Rome's main Termini railways station and the Leonardo da Vinci airport is also guaranteed.
The strike is taking place a day after conservative Premier Silvio Berlusconi was sworn in.
However, transport workers often stage strikes in Italy.
