I wasn't expecting to make this video, however, I recently learned that Marianna Schroeder, the nurse from Glenn Gould's iconic 1967 contrapuntal radio documentary, The Idea of North, has died. She was a dear friend and I miss her very much. ❤️
This video is my tribute to Marianna and, in a way, to Glenn, who would have been 90 this month. I hope that by sharing my memories and photos, it will give people a more personal, human connection to The Idea of North (the first instalment of The Solitude Trilogy) and to Glenn himself. This has been the aim of my blog, Further North and if sharing these nice memories helps someone to approach Glenn's work with fresh ears, then I will consider my work a success! 🥰
The video begins with a reading of an interview that I had with Marianna, in Toronto in 2009. Entitled "Looking Back to The Idea of North: An Interview with Marianne Schroeder" the article was initially published in an online newsletter put out by The Glenn Gould Foundation in August of that year. The article appears to no longer be available online.
The remainder (bulk) of the video consists of memories and photos of my many fun visits with Marianna. Both Marianna and her late husband, Jerry, were very special people in my life. Not many people get my vibe and they did (most of the time.) They were quiet, thoughtful people for whom I cared very much.
