Type 1 laryngeal cleft repair and supraglottoplasty in an infant.
Children with Type 1 laryngeal clefts typically present with significant choking on feeds, recurrent chest infections and difficulty breathing.
A trial of gelfoam injection inside the cleft can help to reduce the choking episodes and is used as a test to determine if a formal repair should be attempted. If the child responds well to this simpler procedure then a formal repair can be planned in the future.
In this view we first perform a formal repair of a Type 1 laryngeal cleft using a carbon dioxide laser. Then a supraglottoplasty is performed to address tight aryepiglottic folds.
