It's been a week now since the selective service website crashed due to all the misinformation about a draft that was about to happen. The draft is not going to happen in case you are still wondering.

However, it did bring to light the fact that there's a lot of people out there that are not aware of selective service or what it is and what it does.
So I just wanted to share some knowledge real quick about what the selective service system is, what it does and how you can register if you still need to and what it has to do with your financial aid if you're a college student, a male college student.
What is selective service? It's an independent agency of the United States government that manages conscription. What is conscription? Conscription is the technical term for the draft.
Conscription actually goes way back in history, you can check out a brief history of conscription here: [ Ссылка ]
It's a law in the United States that every male, every male living in the United States between the age of 18 and 26 has to register for selective service.
Why do they need to do this? Basically, should the U.S. ever need more service members beyond what is currently available with the volunteer force and the reserve force, which right now is over a million service members.
Should the United States need more than what they currently have, then they would reinstate the draft to provide more service members for the war.
Now this would take approval by the president as well as approval by Congress to reinstate the draft or conscription.
Selective service is actually a product of the military service act of 1948, the military service act, is quote "an act to provide for the common defense by increasing the strength of the armed forces of the United States," basically the draft.
So the military service act of 1948 establishes selective service, selective service now manages conscription or the draft.
Again, this is a law for all U.S. males between the ages of 18 to 26. You must register and there are penalties if you do not register.
If you haven't yet, here is the link to the selective service website where you can register:

The other ways that you can register, you can go to your local post office and fill out a registration form, mail it in, or if you happen to be a college student applying for financial aid, there is a section on the financial aid form that you can check off to automatically register yourself for selective service that way.
And that brings me to another topic, having to deal with select a service, the financial aid form and receiving financial aid. You must be registered in order to receive financial aid.
If you're a U.S. male between the ages of 18 and 26, you must be registered with selective service, and if you don't, the government can deny you your financial aid. They can also deny you employment for the federal government.
