(23 Jun 1974) RR7143B IRAN: 25 CENTURIES TO CELEBRATE: Cuts for story number z024017
In October 1971, Iran celebrated the 2,500th anniversary of the founding of the Persian Empire by Cyrus
the Great. The present Shah, Reza Pehlevi, was host to more than 50 Heads of State, who were housed in a
specially constructed tented city alongside the ruins.Ten years research went into the preparations for the
anniversary which is thought to have cost over 40 million pounds. The Shah has been criticised for
wasting money of a profitless display of national identity - an argument he counters by saying that the
anniversary was postponed for ten years to allow him to carry through his far-reaching programme of
social and agrarian reforms.
