STORYLINE
Clashes between protesters angered by a film depicting the Prophet Muhammad and security forces continued near the US embassy in Cairo on Friday for the fourth day in a row.
Police in riot gear blocked the way leading from the Tahrir Square towards the embassy compound.
A number of plain clothes policemen were also seen charging at the protesters alongside riot police.
Police used tear gas to disperse the crowd and the two sides pelted each other with stones.
A burned-out car was overturned in the middle of the street.
One of the protesters climbed onto the wreckage and taunted the police.
On the other side of the US compound, members of the Egyptian military began constructing a concrete barricade on a street leading to the American embassy. Large concrete blocks were lowered from trucks by crane to form a thick wall.
The protests first erupted on Tuesday, sparked by the film depicting Prophet Muhammad in a way said to denigrate the prophet and Islam.
The movie in question, "Innocence of Muslims," came to attention in Egypt after its trailer was dubbed into Arabic and posted on YouTube.
"Some people cannot bear the insult to their religion, especially to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)," said Cairo resident Saiid Al Bahey.
The video-sharing website blocked access to the movie on Wednesday.
The trailer depicts Muhammad as a fraud, a womaniser and a madman in an overtly ridiculing way, showing him having sex and calling for massacres.
The headline on the front page of the "Freedom and Justice", the Muslim Brotherhood newspaper, announced more protests.
"Today is a million men protest for the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)," it read.
American missions have been attacked this week in three Arab nations - Egypt, Yemen and Libya - that have faced persistent unrest and are struggling to restore law and order after last year's revolts deposed their authoritarian regimes.
