How To Avoid Getting Caught In The IRS' Automated Tax Enforcement System
The IRS' Automated Underreporter scans filed tax returns looking for mismatches between information reported on the tax return and information returns such as Forms W-2 or 1099. If the IRS' computers sense a mismatch on your return, you could find yourself caught up in an unnecessary and perhaps costly audit. To avoid this situation, make sure that your tax return reports consistently with the information returns that you receive. This may require that you get information returns fixed prior to filing your tax return. You may need the issuer to correct something on the information return or to issue an information return if one is not issued. Also make sure that you report all income and all deductions; don't net income and deductions on your tax return.
