Despite being an iconic design that’s been around for nearly 70 years, every now and again, Fender like to freshen up their Telecaster range, and that’s exactly what they’ve done with the American Performer series, which now replaces the American Special as their most affordable, all American made Tele.
Just like the American Professional and Elite series guitars, the American Performers, come out of Fenders Corona California facility, but to keep costs down, just like the now discontinued American Special series, they’re kind of a stripped back version of the more expensive models, utilising more economic satin finishing methods, less choice of colour options, slightly lower grade hardware, and they come supplied with a gig bag as opposed to a hard case.
As you might expect, both share traditional Telecaster specs, they feature Alder bodies with 4-bolt Maple necks and either a Rosewood or Maple fingerboard depending on the finish that you go for. They’ve got a standard 25.5” scale length, Fender’s modern C neck profile with a smooth Satin Urethane finish, and a 9.5” fingerboard radius with 22 jumbo frets, so feelwise, nothing’s really changed.
The bridge also remains unchanged, it’s a vintage style string through body design with 3 brass saddles, but up on the headstock, the American Performer Tele is now fitted with set of Fender Classic Gear, vintage style slotted tuners, as opposed to the sealed tuners that were found on the American Special. The Fender logo has also had a subtle cosmetic tweak, it’s now Fender’s traditional silver as opposed to black.
With the American Performer Tele, there’s a larger new range colours to choose from, either Honeyburst or Sonic Blue with a Rosewood fingerboard or if you want a maple fretboard, you’ve got a choice of either Vintage White or Penny, which a lovely kind of copper finish.
Moving onto the electronics, whereas the old American Specials were fitted with Texas Special pickups, the American Performer Tele sports a pair of Fender’s new Yosemite single coils, which have been crafted around a special blend of Alnicos to deliver that unmistakeable Tele twang. Keeping with Tele traditions, these then run through a standard 3 way selector switch, a volume and a tone control, which features Fender’s grease bucket circuitry, allowing you to cut treble frequencies without adding bass or muddying the tone.
So that was just a quick overview of the Fender American Performer series telecaster, and all the subtle changes that have been made from this and the old American special, take a quick look and listen with PMTVUK and try one out at your local Professional Music Technology...
