When I was a federal defendant, I had no idea what to look for in a lawyer. I was vulnerable, scared. Rather than ask tough questions and verify everything the lawyers told me, I fell for it. I want you to learn from my bad decisions!

I am not alone. Our team at White Collar Advice, Prison Professors and Compliance Mitigation have guided more than 1,000 people since 2008. Over the years we have heard too many horror stories from defendants who regretted the process they followed in hiring a lawyer.

When you call a lawyer, you should have a checklist:

1: how long have they been practicing law?
2: can you speak with their current or past clients?
3: have they have had issues with the state bar?
4: do they take payment plans?
5: will they be the lead person on your case?
6: what is the best way to communicate with them?
7: will you get weekly status reports?
8: can you review some of their writings?
9: and more, so much more!
