Dear Friends,
Please understand that this is a SECOND upload necessitated by some deplorable and unacceptable errors within my first production of this clip. I am mightily proud to declare that significant improvements have been implemented to deliver further clarity and accuracy in my painstaking translation. I apologise for any clumsy negligence and inconvenience caused.
一生何求 "Yut Sung Hor Kau (Cantonese): What Can One Ask From Life" is THE question that all of us will ask at some stage in our lives. Hence, the absolute beauty and timeless universal applicability of this song. The full extent of its emotional and spiritual nuance can only be adequately addressed and delivered by the exquisite vocals of 陳百強 Danny Chan Bak-keung. As far as the Cantonese version is concerned, this is the glorious original one. No other Cantonese version can compare. Full stop.
This is the theme song of the 1989 Hong Kong mega smash hit TV series named "義不容情 Yee But Yung Ching", translated into English as "Looking Back In Anger". The literal translation would be "Justice Allows No Sentiments or Mercy". It is the all heart-consuming and soul-probing Cantonese ballad which definitely takes the cake in relation to uncompromising lyrical articulation of utter disillusionment with life after having undergone innumerable trials and tribulations that would suffice to break any living soul, whether having risen from rags-to-riches or not. What exemplary fortitude, indomitable spirit and sense of justice the protagonist possesses! How many of us have that kind of strength and resourcefulness to tackle such monumental hardships and tragedies? The lyrics come forth with a direct brutal honesty yet dressed in a unique graceful clarity that only draws you in deeper and deeper.
An indescribable gnawing pain seeps into my bones whenever hearing this song, especially when delivered by Danny Chan's vocals. How I wish I can convey the magnitude of my pain via mere words. I cannot. His voice alone is enough to plunge my heart into abject sorrow. That is why I often avoid listening to his songs these days, but not having him on my channel is an unforgivable sin. I shall attempt translating and posting several more of his immeasurably and eternally beautiful songs within the next few weeks or months.
What a song! This is one of 陳百強 Danny Chan's most outstanding classics for which he had won several prestigious awards. It befits, but by the same token, transcends the adjectives such as
unforgettable, indelible, haunting, golden classic and so forth. It just grows and grows on you with its deceptive simplicity, ongoing relevance and ageless unpretentious beauty.
One of my all-time idols (besides 孫中山 Sun Yat Sen and 李小龍 Bruce Lee) is 陳百強 Danny Chan Bak-keung. His angelic vocals stirred my heart and soul to the extent of being utterly spellbound and speechless. Countless contemporary vocalists do have a much wider and more powerful range; yet, the very texture and fibre of their voices are one of sheer aggressive prowess devoid of emotional content and in-depth spiritual sensitivity that a true artist
such as 陳百強 Danny Chan exudes. What natural, divine and effortless vocal grace he had! Many have sung his songs with notable technical discipline, but all without the emotional and spiritual impact. They sounded so contrived and empty in their delivery.
Oh Danny Danny, why did you leave this earth so prematurely back on Monday, 25th October 1993 at only thirty-five years of age Perhaps you had to because your heart and soul was enduring the unendurable. Oh, how so many of us are missing your endearing presence, angelic voice and incomparable artistry. No one has, and I doubt anyone will ever take your place in my heart as the indisputable Grand-master and King of Quality Modern Romantic and Melancholic Cantonese Ballads. To my ears, your vocals in this genre is divine and simply irreplaceable. I hope you are resting in peace with God in Heaven.
Friends, if only someone knew how I had wrestled with numerous difficulties in translating the lyrics of this song. Yes, it now appears all so simple and easy. It was nowhere near as such, my friends! Most people are not even aware of how challenging and draining the whole process can be. This project is another manifestation of my blood, sweat and tears. So please do show some basic manners in spite of whatever flaws you may find in this clip. Please feel free to convey your sincere thoughts and constructive criticisms. Thank you for your kind attention once again.
Peace, Love & Liberty,
Yours Sincerely,
Chiki Chan
