This is my routine:

We tune carefully

Next we strum some chords using mostly whole notes. I got carried away in the video. Eventually we got moving on strumming but I wait until they can form the chords and get good clean sounds out of each string. Teaching them to listen and diagnose the problems and fix them so each string rings out. Good ear training.

After chords we move on to sight-reading from a book I like called Beginning Guitar from Progressive Series.

After that we can learn songs they request or work on riffs, scales, arpeggios, melodies. Generally tablature.


All of this happens within a 30 minute period. I think it's pretty effective. We keep it relaxed and fix little problems as they come up. We joke around and have a little conversation as we enjoy our time together. It hardly feels like work but I am pretty tired by the end of a block of lessons.


I am sure grateful for the chance to work in the field of music. The more I learn, the less I know. I aim to keep things simple.
