How is glutathione involved in the body's detoxification process? Detox has become a big buzzword, but it’s actually something that naturally takes place in the body. As it turns out, glutathione is an essential cog in the detoxification machine, helping the body in get rid of harmful toxins. VIDEO TRANSCRIPT: Everyone has a natural detoxification system in their body, and glutathione is crucially involved in keeping it ticking along. It includes three stages and mainly occurs in the liver.

Stage I:

During phase I, toxins are partially processed by proteins inside the liver into something called ‘intermediates’. These compounds are even more dangerous than when they were in their original form.

Stage II:

In stage two of detoxification, glutathione and other enzymes bind toxins with protective compounds in a process called conjugation. This neutralises, inactivates and makes them more water-soluble so they can be eliminated from the body!

Stage III:

Finally, the toxins are eliminated from the body, mainly via the kidneys (through urine) and the liver (through bile).
