In the late 18th century, the Kingdom of France spiraled into chaos. A series of crises befell Great Britain's continental rival, culminating in the so-called French Revolution. And, though many believe the revolution began with the Storming of the Bastille on July 14, 1789, that was just a result of what occurred beforehand. This event was followed by others: the Insurrection of 10 August 1792 (aka Tuileries Palace), the Champ de Mars Massacre, and Louis XVI's execution.

This, in turn, would have an impact not only in France, but the whole of Europe, triggering war(s) that eventually saw the involvement of Russia, Prussia, the Holy Roman Empire, Portugal, Spain, and Great Britain. These wars and instability across the continent also benefited the rise of Napoleon Bonaparte.
