STORYLINE
Turkey's ruling party sought a third term in elections on Sunday, aiming to build on economic and diplomatic advances in recent years as well as introduce a new constitution it says will make the country more democratic.
Some 15 parties and 200 independent candidates were contesting 550 seats for four-year terms in parliament, with surveys in past weeks indicating the Islamic-rooted Justice and Development Party (AKP) of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan was headed for another win.
Erdogan cast his vote at a polling station in Istanbul.
He has promised that a new constitution would include "basic rights and freedoms," replacing a constitution implemented under the tutelage of the military in 1982. However, he has provided relatively few details on a possible new draft.
The AKP's main opponent is the secular Republican People's Party (CHP), led by Kemal Kilicdaroglu.
The CHP is trying to reinvent itself, arguing that with growth has come increasing authoritarianism.
Kilicdaroglu voted alongside his wife in the capital, Ankara.
Addressing supporters after casting his vote, Kilicdaroglu called the election "a feast of democracy" and said he hoped his party would win to bring "democracy and freedom" to Turkey.
He added that his party would respect the outcome of the election.
Another AKP election victory would mean a third consecutive term of just five years in power.
Polls close at 4 p.m. (1300GMT) on Sunday in the country's eastern provinces and 5 p.m. (1400GMT) in the western provinces.
