Your root canal is now complete! So what's next? Hi my name is Thomas Graham, board certified endodontist and owner of Compassion Endodontics in Berks County, Pennsylvania. At Compassion Endodontics we strive to provide you with the highest quality care to ensure that you are healing and feeling better as soon as possible.
You as the patient play an important role in your dental care, so what do you need to know to help ensure the smoothest recovery?
1. Don’t eat or drink right away!
Most patients can go right back to school, work or other routine activities after root canal therapy. You can brush and floss normally but please allow 30 min to an hour before eating or drinking for two reasons: to allow your temporary filling material to completely set-up and to allow the dental anesthetic to wear off. The amount of time for the anesthetic to wear off is slightly different for each patient but is generally around an hour after the procedure.
2. There may be soreness so follow your post-op instructions!
As the dental anesthetic begins to wear off you may have some mild soreness for a few days. Tenderness can result from the injection site of the dental anesthetic and in your jaw joint and muscles form keeping your mouth open. These symptoms are temporary and will resolve on their own. BUT they do respond very well to over-the-counter medications which will speed up the recovery process. Please remember to comply with all written and verbal instructions provided to you after your treatment that relate to your specific situation and take all medications only as prescribed or recommended.
3. Call your family dentist to get a permanent filling!
After root canal treatment is performed, a temporary filling material is placed to seal the tooth until you can get back to your family dentist.
Please follow up with your dentist promptly to receive the permanent filling material so that your tooth can be properly restored back into function. And just so you know, to ensure a smooth hand-off, your family dentist will receive a detailed report about your care at Compassion Endodontics.
4. Don’t use the tooth until it has a permanent filling!
Until you see your family dentist, it is important that you do not attempt to chew or function with the tooth while it has a temporary filling. Chewing with the tooth can result in cracking or breaking the tooth . Unless instructed otherwise, an ideal time frame to get a permanent restoration is between two and four weeks after the root canal treatment is finished.
