US TO ARM ANBAR TRIBES
The White House clarified that the U.S. military won’t send special operations forces to accelerate the counteroffensive to retake Ramadi from ISIS. U.S. President Barack Obama is considering faster training and providing more arms to local Sunni tribes in Anbar instead. ISIS seized Ramadi on May 17th, causing 25,000 of its resident to flee.
CHIEF CLAIMS SOLDIERS KILLED
A regional Ukrainian chief has said that four Ukrainian servicemen were killed in the east of the country. Gennady Moskal, governor of Luhansk region, claimed that the separatists opened fire on the Ukrainian government forces near the village of Katerinovka. But military forces have yet to confirm the assault. A ceasefire signed in Minsk has calmed down the situation in eastern Ukraine. The fragile peace has been violated by both Ukraine and pro-Russian separatists in Donetsk, Luhansk and Mariupol.
LIBYA ENVOY TO EU
Libya’s Tripoli-based GNC government has sent a special envoy to speak with the European Union regarding the EU's naval operation NAVFOR MED. It is aimed at targeting boats of “migrant smugglers” heading into Europe through Libya. The UN’s mission in Libya said the GNC had confirmed its “eagerness to do its effective role in controlling the mass migration which claimed the lives of thousands of people.” The EU would need consent from the United Nations to operate in Libya’s territorial waters.
TAKATA AIR BAG RECALL
Air bag maker Takata Corp. has agreed to declare 33.8 million of its inflator mechanisms defective. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration made the announcement after a year-long battle with the company. Many of Takata's air bags can explode with too much force. The air bags are responsible for six deaths worldwide and more than 100 injuries.The Takata recall dwarfs last year's highly publicised recall of 2.6 million General Motors small cars for defective ignition switches.
