Watch as I share the last steps needed for my Kozo Hiraoka ¾” scale Pennsylvania A-3 Switcher 0-4-0 steam engine build for the tender wheels. In this installment, I will be demonstrating final machining techniques including facing and plunge cutting, cutting a taper, measurement processes using a dial caliper, and radius gauge. All machining is performed on a Sherline 4400 with a self-centering three jaw chuck. My chuck jaws are set up to hold an arbor made in a previous installment of 1018CR steel (cold rolled 1018) that is .510” thick by 2.250” inches wide. I am using high speed steel cutters for the lathe turning processes as well as Carbide insert turning tools. While modern CNC milling centers are amazing for the maker and home shop machinist, there are some things you simply cannot do without a Lathe. Believe it or not, but the Lathe is known as the mother of all machine tools, for this piece of equipment led to the development of many other machine tools such as the vertical and horizontal milling machines. With proper fixturing, layout, and calculations the Lathe can do it all. It is a keystone piece of equipment in any machine shop whether for commercial or home use. In this video I will be demonstrating the Sherline Lathe “C Package”. I chose this particular Lathe for our project because it had many features, I felt would be beneficial for our build; the Kozo ¾” scale Pennsylvania A-3 Switcher 0-4-0 steam engine.
