RULES:
The object of the game is to have the most points after 4 rounds. The object of each round is to complete a row of sets on your game board. A set is 2 or more identical tiles. Give each player a player screen. Mix up the game boards and give each player a board, which they keep hidden behind their player screen. Mix up the tiles facedown in the middle of the table then each player draws seven tiles and hides them faceup behind their screen. Include the Jokers in this mix. Players may place any matching tile on its corresponding spot on their board.
The spaces on the board must be matched as follows:
• A colored blank can have any tile of that color. If there are multiple-colored blanks grouped together, then you must place a set of that color.
• A number must have a set of that specific number in any matching color.
• A faded tile with color and number must be matched exactly with that specific tile.
• Dragon symbols must be matched with dragons of the same color.
The youngest player goes first, then play proceeds counterclockwise. Before beginning play you must exchange tiles using the Charleston . This can be easily remembered as ROLL. Right. Over. Left. Lucky. Each player must pass 3 tiles RIGHT, then 2 tiles OVER to the player across from you, then 1 tile LEFT. All passes must be simultaneous, you cannot look at the tiles you are receiving before picking which ones to pass.
For the LUCKY pass, each player picks 0, 1, 2, or 3 tiles to place facedown just beyond their player screen for the others to see. Now, in turn order, each player may swap any of the Lucky pass tiles in front of them with any other tiles in front of another player, if they want. Once everyone has done that, or passed, then players take the lucky tiles remaining in front of them back behind their player screen.
Play now begins. On your turn, draw one tile from the middle and add it behind your screen. If you have now completed a winning row of sets, you must call out “Mahjong” and you win the round. If not, then you must discard a tile faceup to the center, calling out that tile’s name. A discarded tile is called a “thrown” tile. When a tile is thrown, all the other players get a chance to call that tile.
You can call a tile if that tile can be placed on your board. You are only allowed to call the tile that was just thrown. After you call, you must take down your player screen so all the players can see your board for the remainder of the round. If more than 1 player calls a tile at the same time, then the tile goes to the player in this priority:
• 1st priority is to a player who would have a mahjong.
• 2nd is to a player who would have a set.
• 3rd is to a player who would have a tile fit on their board.
If multiple players tie for priority, then the tile goes to the closest of those players in counterclockwise turn order from the current player.
When a player claims a thrown tile, unless they have a mahjong, the order of play immediately skips to them, and it is their turn. After receiving the thrown tile. they must then discard a tile to the middle and end their turn. This process allows for some player’s turns to be skipped. If the thrown tile is not called, then the tile remains faceup on the table and may no longer be drawn or called. Play then passes to the next player counterclockwise.
Joker’s are wilds and can represent any tile within any group that has the joker symbol on your board. Jokers that are thrown may not be called. You are not allowed to pass jokers during the Charleston tile exchange.
The first player to complete a row on their board does not discard their final tile, but instead yells “mahjong” and wins the round, scoring points equal to the value of their completed row as seen here. Record the points on a scorepad then gather up the tiles and mix them up. All players trades boards and play another round, with the starting player rotating counterclockwise by one. After 4 rounds, the player with the most points wins. If it is a tie, then the tied players share the victory.
