The bull-jumping ceremony is an important rite of passage for young Hamer (or Hamar) men to enter into adulthood.
The Hamer are an Omotic community inhabiting the southwestern part of Ethiopia. They raise cattle and grow crops for their livelihood.
Only after the young man has successfully completed the bull-jumping act can he be married. Being a major ritual, this act involves the full support and literal sacrifice of the young men's relatives - female relatives will allow themselves to be whipped (and scarred in the process), to show their support towards the young man's success in the bull-jumping act.
This ceremony takes an entire day and cumulates with the bull-jumping act.
