Grozny, the most beautiful city in Caucasus by those times (or so it was claimed by everyone). A happy and peaceful living nation who wanted freedom for themselves; independence from the Soviet Union. Russia disagreed and did not allow Chechen independence the way they allowed independence for Latvia or Azerbaijan. Russia thought the Chechen nation was too small and inferior in every aspect to show any kind of resistance, and that they would take Chechnya in two hours (the words of Russian general Pavel Grachev). This arrogance and greed led to the first Russian-Chechen War which ended in Chechen victory and the loss of thousands of lives and damages worth in the millions. Chechnya was too war-ravaged, weak and ignored by the world which did not allow the Chechen nation to live a successful life of prosperity post-war. This video shows the peaceful life before the wars. The Chechens did not imagine that their neighbors, former countrymen would start a war against them. They did not realize until it was too late, when the planes started bombing and the armored vehicles started rolling in on Chechen territory.
The music in this video is the instrumental version of the anthem of Chechen Republic of Ichkeria; [1oƶalla ya maršo] (Death or Freedom) performed by Slovak State Philharmonic Orchestra.
