The Legend of the Turul, also known as Emese's dream, is one of the oldest Hungarian legends. It dates back to 860-870 A.D. The myth, describing the origins of the Turul (Árpád) dynasty, was recorded in the Chronicon Pictum, an illustrated medieval chronicle of the 14th century. The text was based on an earlier source and was written by Anonymus, the notary and chronicler of Béla III (King of Hungary between 1172 and 1196).
So what kind of bird was the Turul? Historians think that it was a predatory bird but they don't seem to be able to agree on the exact species. The most plausible theory is that it was a hawk; however, there were many predatory birds in the area where the ancestors of Hungarians lived, so the exact identity of the bird remains unclear. According to linguists, the word Turul is of Turkish origin and comes from "togrul/tugrul", meaning "gyrfalcon".
In this video, two legends are presented: that of Emese's dream, and that of the dream of the clan chief of Levédia.
