(10 Sep 1996) Up to 300-thousand Kurds may have left Sulaymaniyah, heading for the nearby mountains and the border with Iran after Saddam Hussein's Kurdish allies captured the city.
In another development, Saddam declared a general amnesty for all Kurds, including members of the rebel Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (P-U-K).
These APTV pictures show victorious Kurdish Democratic Party (K-D-P) soldiers celebrating their victories Monday as P-U-K-controlled towns fell one by one.
It shows them marching on the road to Sulaymaniyah.
The K-D-P stormed Sulaymaniyah on Monday night, taking the last P-U-K stronghold in the Kurdish safe-haven.
The latest K-D-P victory gives Saddam Hussein effective control over northern Iraq for the first time since the 1991 Gulf War.
In Sheklawa, K-D-P members with yellow ribbons tied around their guns piled into trucks, taxis and cars to catch up with the rapidly moving front-line.
