Questions to Ask When Selecting a Cannabis Strain To Grow
Professor DeBacco
Some Questions to Ask
First step is to determine the area you will be growing
How large?
How many plants?
Also, having an idea if what your goal end product will be can also influence your selection.
Dry flower?
Extraction?
Plant Morphology
When considering the area, the plant morphology should be considered.
How tall will the plant get?
Will it need frequent pruning?
Not Height Limited
This could lend to the selection of Sativa dominate strains
However, just because you have the height does not mean you have to use it.
Ex. If you are growing outdoors tall plants may be subject to late season wind storm damage.
Also, more plant material may increase the need for pruning which will take labor and time.
Indoor or Outdoor Growing?
Looking at the location and potential of seasonal timing (for outdoor grow) can influence the strain selection.
Photoperiod dependent or Autoflower?
Autoflower… Count the Days
Autoflowers offer the advantage of knowing how many days until flower and harvest for planning.
However, will this offer the greatest yield since these plants tend to be smaller overall?
These can be limiting as there is a set number of fixed days of plant production, so can you maximize each day?
Why Not Select the Highest CBD Producer?
Most growers will easily be drawn to a strain that has the biggest numbers of CBD or certain terpenes.
This should be a consideration, but not the only consideration as you need to know if you can maximize the plant production based on the environmental factors.
