Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced on Wednesday that Toronto and Peel Region would be able to move on to Stage 3 in the province’s reopening plan at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, July 31.
Ford made the announcement alongside Deputy Premier Christine Elliott and Minister of Long-Term Care Merrilee Fullerton.
He said health officials would need “a little more time” to evaluate the data before allowing Windsor-Essex to move on to that phase, but pledged ongoing support for businesses and residents in the region.
“We’re throwing everything at this to make sure we take care of the people in Windsor-Essex,” he said.
Ford also announced Wednesday his government would appoint an independent commission to investigate the issues in long-term care that were exposed during the novel coronavirus pandemic.
Ford said the commission would be led led by associate chief justice Frank Marrocco.
