As mentioned a while ago, my goal is to go back and make rankings on past years of Eurovision, with 1998 being up next!
The 1998 contest of Eurovision took place in Birmingham in the United Kingdom. A total of 25 countries competed this year.
The 1998 contest was won by Israel, achieving a third victory with Dana International's "Diva". The United Kingdom finished in 2nd place with Imaani's "Where Are You?", another 2nd place finish for the UK. Third place was achieved by Malta, a record result for the island nation at the time with Chiara's "The One That I Love".
Romania returned this year for a second attempt in Eurovision next to 1994. After their regulation from 1998, Belgium, Finland, Israel and Slovakia returned for this edition, while Austria, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Denmark, and Iceland were relegated and therefore had to sit the year out.
Italy and Russia withdrew, but 1998 saw the first appearance of North Macedonia, or the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia at the time.
